Embossing

I was recently talking to a seasoned printer and he mentioned an old method used for embossing. He was walking about using a wax sheet that is heated up and then ‘imprinted’ with your design/ plate.

Has anyone used this method before? It sounds quite interesting and possibly cheaper if it works…

Embossing requires very firm pressure to deform the paper fibers into the desired shape. I’ve never seen wax used in the embossing process as it seems it would be too soft a material. Usually heat is used in the embossing process and wax certainly would not survive that.

Perhaps he was confusing electrotype processes with embossing.

I’m not sure! Using an Adana 8x5 as an example press. You would mount your plate or fill your chase as normal. Then adhere a sheet of wax onto the paper feeder. Heat up the wax until soft and then press onto the design, let the wax cool until rock (wax) hard… I’m not sure if the wax would hold its integrity post cooling though?!

Food for thought…
