Morgan Write-a-Sign help and questions

I had found a Morgan write a sign for 20 bucks and i know its not exactly standard letterpress but the idea applies. the type is rubber and has a magnetic bottom, would i clean this like any other type? or would it get eaten by the chemicals? also it came with ink and it looks like oil based and im not sure how old it is, 60s maybe, is the ink still good? should i just buy new to get a fresh start? any help would be nice. google didnt help at all.

Hi,

Not bad for twenty bucks. Looks to be about 7” x 10” if those are 1/2” inch increments. Regarding solvent, personally I wouldn’t use anything stronger than mineral spirits on the rubber type. Even kerosene might be a little harsh.
I’d say if the ink is still gooey under the skin, and not all dried up, bray it out on a piece of glass, use it and see what kind of results you get. You should be able to use regular oil based printers ink, and maybe thin it with a drop or two of mineral spirits if it’s too tacky.
I’m wondering how many fonts came with it?
Looks neat. Have fun with it.

cool thanks. yeah its about 6 x 9” and there is 3 fonts and some borders and a large set of numbers.

You should also be able to use polymer plates, if you wish, by mounting them to the correct thickness of plexiglass with magnetic material under that. Just measure the thickness of your current type and come as close as you can to matching that caliper.

For certain it was a good buy.

I also recently found one of these at an antique shop online, but didn’t buy it because i wasn’t 100% sure how it worked. Like you, I tried google, but had no luck. Do you know how it works? If so, would you mind giving me a quick overview? I’d like to go back and get it if I know I could use it.
