[Solved] Throw-off Lever Screw Size for 1921 C & P

I purchased a Chandler & Price 12x18 that was made in 1921-22. I noticed that that Throwoff Lever Screw is missing, making the Throwoff Lever pretty loose and the press permanent print mode unless I pull the chase out. I am looking to find out the size screw that I need to get the Throw-off lever working again.

I found the diagram here: http://www.boxcarpress.com/community/manuals/cp-newseries-parts-list.pdf It appears to be part 78S.

Thank you in advance!

Per Ericm’s suggestion in the comment below:

“It is prob 1/4 or 5/16 NC thread. if you have a set of drills. find one that fits well, with the bit inserted. mark the bit with tape or marker. this will give you an idea of depth/length. take the bit with you to ace. tell them you need a screw for that size hole. the screw will be slightly bigger dia than your bit due to thread depth. they will have this screw and most square heads do not come with a nickel finish, thus it will look okay and will age quickly to match your press.”

Which screw is this? It’s hard to know by number 785 as it’s not shown installed. Most of the C&P presses of this period had non-standard thread size and count. I am pretty sure I have a bunch of leftover screws from a 12x18 that’s about the same age as your press.

Post a photo if you can of the area from which this screw is missing. If I have a spare it’s yours for the postage.

Brad.

It is actually 78-S on the diagram.

True. Presumably the ‘S’ stands for ‘Screw’ — and I assume this is the screw that passes through the throwoff lever and into the bracket attached to the press. I’ll take a look and see if I have a spare laying around…

Brad.

@Brad
Thanks for the info. I had no idea. I have attached the diagram that shows it installed. When inspecting it there are two other screws to the left and right of it connecting to the same shaft. Looks to be the identical size.

@Dennis
Thank you for the correction.

Is this a small, square-headed setscrew?

Brad

Yes Sir.

I don’t have any in my spares box, but I’ll check around the shop tomorrow morning. I’m pretty sure, though, that I’ve replaced one of these before with a square-headed set screw from ACE hardware. I don’t recall the exact size, but chances are you could eyeball it—just make sure you’re not using a fine thread screw.

I’ll send an update tomorrow.

Thanks,
Brad.

Thanks for all of your help Brad. If you have one let me know what you want for it. I’d love to have my press look authentic and not have a little eyesore on it.

Cheers!

Matt

Here is another possible source, these guys restore these presses: http://www.defeliceenginc.com/index.shtml

Good Luck,

Matt,

I checked in the shop and I don’t seem to have a spare bolt. I have a bunch of random bolts from C&Ps, but nothing that would fit your needs. I would follow Eric’s advice and head to ACE hardware — they often have black oxide set screws with a square head that will blend in with your press.

Good luck finding what you need!

Brad.

@Dennis
Thanks for the link. I hadn’t been to their site before.

@Eric
Thanks for the sizes. Drill bit idea is perfect. Would have never thought to do that. Cheers!

@Brad
Bummer. Thank you for checking. I will definitely follow Eric’s suggestion. Thanks again for all of the help.
