Showcard type

I ended up with a few fonts of Showcard type in a lot with some other things. The type from Showcard, as you might know, has a deep groove in its body which is supposed to fit over removable rails in the press bed. Does anyone have much experience printing with this stuff locked up in a chase rather than on the rails of the Showcard sign presses? Seems like it might quickly need more makeready than solid type, and I’m a bit concerned that the type might break. Experiences?

I should also mention that I don’t have a Showcard press of any sort.

Gabriel,

We have quite a bit of it which came with our press. Both metal & wood in sizes from about 24-144 pt. The students print with it regularly locked in chases and on the flat bed press. Seems to do fine except when a letter is really worn. Then it usually requires a little make ready to raise it to type high.

I have a Sofadi showcard font but no press, just use it like any other wooden type.
The blackheartletterpress pics of the type on the bed are fantastic.

You should have no problems or trouble treating this type just as any other. It will lock-up and print exactly like all other foundry and wood type and will not break under the pressure of the lock-up.

Thanks to everyone for the accounts of your experience. I’m glad to hear that I can use the type in a chase.

Blackheart Press, your photographs are worth a thousand words… nicely done.

Thanks.
