SAE 20W - for Heidelberg Platen 10x15

Dear fellow printers,

I just got myself an Original Heidelberg Platen 10x15 for my shop.

It is really hard here to look for a SAE 30, which is the usual one used for lubrication I heard.

I need your help in telling me whether 4 motor engine oil SAE 20W as attached, is okay for lubricating my Heidelberg?

If not - what do you suggest for alternatives?

Thanks a lot! Looking forward to hearing tips from all of you.

Best,
Karen

karen.d Your oil or lack of the correct grade is not quite the Hi-Tech problem you imagine, H/bergs, were around before MULTIGRADE was devised, and this mainly for use in automobiles to with stand variations in temperature, (which is not evident in H/bergs)
H/berg probably specified, MONO grade 30W-40w for the light use parts, and probably 90w for gear trains.
Therefore your only available, (pictured) supply actually marked 20W-50 would equate to approx 30-40w in automobile use with temperature involved.!!!
As letterpress machines generate very little heat or friction, (except a little on the air pump and the motor) You could use your 20w-50 without problems, except that you would have to oil up, or replenish you reservoir a little more frequently!!
One small trick if all else fails!! and it were possible, obtain any higher grade 40/50 grade and combine with your 20w-50 to raise the standard/grade of your existing oil??
ONLY compatible mineral oil, (not synthetic) and as a test method, by using an ordinary (squirt) oil can, by careful use, and feel of the back pressure, from the oil can, can be determined the viscosity you have reached, none will waste in the mixing? ***have fun firing it into a clean container?***
When you can fire it from the oil can, it will fire into your oil points.
A flexible neck oil can is far safer for operator and machine
than the fixed solid original supplied. Good Luck.

Dear Mick on Monotype,

Thanks so much for your answer. I am so relieved to know that this oil can be used for the machine. As the range of products available in Indonesia is not as many as there are in the States…unfortunately, but naturally.

I have tried lubricating the press using that oil - so far so good, no complications.

Anyway - thanks again!
