We offer many of the Postscript files in Cuts & Caps free for your personal use in any medium. You can use them as is, or modify them in any way to suit your artistic purposes. We don’t own the rights to the original source graphics, which are in the public domain, but the Postscript (eps) files we create from them are the products of significant labor.
In return, we’d love it if you would provide a link back to Briar Press, at briarpress.org. (We know that attribution isn’t always feasible—on greeting cards, for instance.) Please do not redistribute the Postscript files digitally on other sites or media.
Commercial use
To offset the expense of maintaining our free services, we request a one-time fee of $36 from commercial users for the use in print or digital media of each Postscript file. (Special, time-intensive ornaments may cost more, where indicated.) Please do not redistribute the Postscript files digitally on other sites or media.
Fees may be paid by check or by PayPal, with our thanks for helping to support our free services. If you’re interested in commercial use of ornaments you’ve identified, please send a request to Briar Press indicating the ID number(s) of the ornaments in question. To find an ornament’s ID number, click on the ornament and then look for the number that follows ‘briarpress.org’ in the url.
Non-profit use
Non-profit organizations may use our ornaments for free. If your non-profit regularly uses our ornaments for publishing or fundraising, please consider supporting our free services with a donation.
Hi,
I’m an old letterpress printer and your site was recommended to me from Ed Thompson, who I purchased some type cases from.
We were quite impressed with your new website. We have been trying to download some of your CAPS Initials but only can get the letter that is displayed. Unfortunately, we need other initials. Underneath each initial it lists larger quantities are available for downloading. How do you get the rest of the alphabet?
Thank you and have a nice day! Jim
Did you get an answer back?
I would like a matching set too.
I would too…
Hello Jim Baer and others,
Sorry to take so long in responding to your post. The reason nobody answered you is because we do not review all the posts that are made in the Discussion forum, so none of the Briar Press staff (the two of us) were aware of your inquiry. If you have a question that needs to be answered by someone at Briar Press, feel free to contact us through any of the topics on the Help pages at http://www.briarpress.org/help. If your concern does not appear on our list, go to http://www.briarpress.org/add/request, use the pull-down menu to select an appropriate topic, and fill in your question in the field for Remarks. Your question will certainly be answered more promptly.
As for your inquiry about the cuts, there are a number of reasons why you can only download the image that is displayed. First, these images are taken from old type specimen books. Frequently these books did not display entire alphabets. If they are shown in our books, we probably have not converted entire alphabets to postscript files as this is a very time-consuming process.
If you need a special letter that is not displayed, if we have the image, and if time allows, we have taken special orders for a fee.
Hope this answers your question. Feel free to contact us if you need additional information.
