Rollers melt down
I recently picked up a 5 x 8 Excelsior press – in a very condition – but the rollers had totally disintegrated. How can I clean the gunge that has made its way down?
Is there a magic solution, or is it just scraping away?

reason I only make rubber rollers.
many brass wire wheels in your Dremel tool.
I have tried paint stripper, acid, parts cleaner nothing will touch it.
Could you burn it off? Whatever you do will probably require repainting anyway.
Lacquer Thinner will soften it, but you have to mechanically scrape it off.
It sucks
Ware gloves and a respirator
A powder like flour, talc, or baking soda will absorb the moisture and make scraping a little easier. It took several applications when I had to do it. You might have to use hot water between applications to soften it and make it sticky for the powder to adhere.
Thank you for all the advice, I managed with a lot of patience, a scraper and rags to clean it up.
Now I need to get the rollers re-covered. I’m opting for rubber rollers.
Is there anybody out there who can give me the diameter of the rollers for this particular model?
Thanks in advance!

If you have the roller wheels/trucks and they are all the same size, they are the diameter of the rollers too. If you have the cores send them with the trucks to a roller maker (yes, rubber is best, 30-durometer is standard)) for the best resilts.
Thank you AdLibPress, I’ve got the trucks, the cores et al. and will send that to my supplier.
