10 x 15 C & P Press - To buy or Not to buy?

I’m a graphic designer, who loves letterpress, theres a local print shop selling a 10 x 15 C & P for $500

Still works fine, new motor, but not sure what else it comes with
Read some opinions that other people posted, what questions should I be asking

or what books should i read before I get into this?

Any help is good help so thanks in advance

remove the special characters and spaces from your picture file name. i.e. cp.png instead of c & p.png.

sorry about that.. ha

The full length inker rails indicate that this is a C&P Craftsman or late model New Style. If it comes with rollers and chases, not a bad deal at all.

what would be the best books to learn about it, and letterpress in general

I don’t think this is a Craftsman as the frame (from what I can see) is a New Series frame. Even without rollers, $500 seems to be about the average for a floor model C&P in good shape.

Hope this helps,
Brad.

Look for Platen Press Operation by Mills (expensive but great) and Elementary Platen Presswork by Polk.

k thanks guys. I’ll keep ya updated on here what some of the details are.

One of the best modern books is:
“Letterpress Printing, A Manual for Modern Fine Press Printers,” by Paul Maravelas.
You can get it from NA Graphics: www.nagraph.com
(NA Graphics is an essential resource anyway).
They also carry “General Printing,” by Cleeton, Pitken, and Cornwell (1963).

David M. MacMillan

Given the cobbled up delivery and feedboards, along with what looks like a homemade cover for the main gearwheel, this is either a Old Style upgraded (were you able to look at the flywheel spokes?) or the press had a Rice Feeder on it at one point (would be extra bits on the gear side and under the feedboard). Just make sure it isn’t a Kluge (which have no dwell time on the grippers for hand feeding).

It’s definitely a New Series, but it could very well have had a feeder attached at some point.

I don’t think it’s a Kluge as even the Kluge Open Press (hand fed) had more substantial “feet” on the frame.

Hope that helps,
Brad.

Hey guys got a few more pictures, im pretty sure its a C &P (as seen in the picture below)

Yes, it’s a New Series Chandler and Price floor model platen. No doubt about it. It’s very hard to tell from the photos, but to me it almost looks like an 8x12. Again, it’s almost impossible to tell without some reference point, so it may very well be a 10x15 as stated.
