Acme Numbering Machine

I recently acquired 2 Acme numbering machines and
a “Plunger” unit along with keyed rods and locking collars.
A friend and I tore down the machine that looked to be in the best shape and installed another wheel in it for a total of 7.
I guess my first question is why is the Plunger so high?
Anyone have experience with these?

The plunger is high as the closure of the platen provides the force to turn the rod and advance the machine. To print with this requires either locating the plunger off the form and printing on the tympan (works on Kluge or handfed platens or most cylinder presses. If you don’t want to print on the tympan, or are using a Heidelberg Windmill, you will need a frisket attached to the sheet gripper/frisket attachment.

Remote plunger machines are very nice for getting a machine into an odd spot without cutting friskets and are easier on rollers than regular machines.

These are more appropriately used on cylinders but as mentioned there are advantages to using them in all machines .
