Where can I find wood furniture?
Hello all!
I’m a letterpress student and have just received my first press, a Kelsey 5x8 restored by Tom and Terri Kartes. As I stock up my shop with the basics, there’s one thing I’ve yet to be able to source: wood furniture and/or reglets.
There’s less than 1/2” to fill between the chase and the base, so not much is needed. This chase comes with 6 screws that you can tighten in place of using quoins. While there has been some back and forth on this topic on other threads, I’m going to give the screws a shot before investing in quoins. So, just the furniture and reglets are needed for now.
I have seen some listings on ebay in the range of $90-$120 for a big box of stuff. That’s a lot more than I need for a small tabletop press, and I’d love to find a more cost-friendly option if possible. I’ve considered making my own but I don’t currently have access to woodworking tools and would love to give existing materials new life. Per the advice shared on previous threads, I’ve also reached out to John at Letterpress Things and Fritz at NA Graphics, hoping to hear back from them soon.
Please let me know if you have any sources. Thank you and I’m excited to be here!
I’m located in Honolulu, HI.
John at Letterpress Things may be busy for a while yet, as I know they had an unexpected move out of the building they were using.
Not sure how much small stuff I have, but I know I have extra furniture I could spare. Most likely a small or medium Flat Rate box of furniture or reglet would have you covered for quite a while. Actually, reglet might be the most useful thing for you right now. I’ll check my shop for what I have.

I made a lot of my own. Got some scrap die board from die supplier. Set up the table saw and cut, Carefully, the sizes you want
Here’s another supplier selling new furniture.

I’ve also made my own from dieboard-it’s flat and probably more stable than original furniture. I also have resalite furniture, which is an excellent choice if you can find it used.
The last set I bought was over $800 new.
If you don’t have any more room than that for furniture I suggest instead buy some 1/4”x3/4” steel bar stock maybe two pieces each cut about a half inch less than the inside length and width measure of the chase. Two of those for the set screws to bear on, and if you need filler either reglet or another two steel bars on the opposite sides of the chase from the set screws should secure everything well. Better steel bars than wood reglets for the set screws to bear on.
